Paula Rego: O Vinho (Wine) SIGNED

This copy is signed by the artist in pen.

Paua Rego's O Vinho (Wine) is inspired by a short story by the Portuguese novelist João de Melo.

In de Melo’s short story, wine is not a diversion but a re-engagement with life, an awakening that imparts a new freedom and a fresh intensity to the narrative voice. The lead character takes us on an exploration into the ‘unique and delicious secrets of wine’, secrets that reveal and illuminate aspects of his humanity otherwise lost in the monotony of his daily existence as an office worker.

The text of de Melo’s O Vinho book is accompanied by a sequence of nine images reproducing lithographs by Paula Rego, each one a story in itself, and all indicative of the transforming effects of ‘the colour, the soul, the profound essence of wine.’ Rego is also the translator of de Melo’s short story – his first to appear in English.

Artists Biography

(Pauls Rego born 1935). Although she was born in Lisbon, Portugal, Paula Rego was educated in English schools while growing up and attended the Slade School of Art. There, she studied under Coldstream and also met and married fellow painter, Victor Willing. The couple lived in Portugal for some time before moving to London in 1963. Rego’s early work was strongly influenced by Dubuffet and she made abstract collages sometimes with political themes. However, her later work became figurative and she began creating compositions influenced by childhood stories and memories. A successful artist in the United Kingdom and Portugal, Rego became the first Associate Artist of the National Gallery in London in 1990. She also produced a mural in the Sainsbury Wing of the gallery in 1991.
