John Piper

John Piper is one of the most distinguished British artists of his generation. The many strands of his life and work are brought together in this beautifully produced book (designed by Edward Piper, his son) to present a full portrait of the man and artist. Piper was born in Epsom in 1903. In his schooldays he showed that interest in topographical drawing which is so marked in his later work. But his father, a solicitor, refused to let him study art and it was not until 1926 that he entered the Richmond School of Art and then, a year later, the Royal College of Art. By 1933 his gifts had matured so greatly that he was invited to join the Seven and Five, a group of painters and sculptors which included the elite of the English modern movement, among them Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Ivon Hitchens. Later in the 1930s Piper's strongly individualistic tendencies led him to separate himself from the group, the more freely to pursue his own line on development. Since then he has followed many directions, each with complete mastery , to produce the very wide range of excellent and distintive works for which he is so well known today. This copy is in very good condition. The dust-jacket has some minimal wear to the edges.
