John Banting: A Blue Book of Conversation

'A Blue Book of Conversation' is a series of drawings by John Banting designed to be printed as blue-prints. They are blue-prints of an age and a society, and they are accompanied by a short text which provides a fantastic, but appropriate comment on the drawings. In his satire on upper-class society Mr Banting has used motifs drawn from primal life, insects and their larvae, fossils, leaves, amoebas, skulls etc. With these he depicts only too well the manners and attitudes of his lords and their ladies. Mr Banting's satire is savage, but it is none the less admirable for that; and the skill of his drawing combined with the fantastic wit of his comments succeeds in making the book a memorable and entrancing record of a world that has had its day.' (From the dust-jacket).

Illustrated with decorative title and twenty-five plates, of which one is double-page. All of the plates are printed in blue after designs by Banting. Original cloth with yellow printed dust-jacket. First edition, from the library of André Breton.
