Edward Burra Pallant House Gallery Exhibition Catalogue (Hardback)

This new Edward Burra book is has been specially produced to coincide with the new major exhibition which opens at Pallant House Gallery from 22nd October 2011. View more details about the exhibition here.

Edward Burra (1905-76) was an English painter who is best known for his paintings of the seedy underworld of urban life. Yet, as this fascinating new monograph on his work reveals, his interests were much broader, incorporating landscape and still-life paintings, stage designs and book illustration. Somewhat neglected by histories of modern art because his singular vision was often at odds with the mainstream art world, his work is now due for a re-appraisal.

Published to accompany a major exhibition of Burra's paintings and drawings at Pallant House Gallery, this important book represents the first full-scale monograph on Edward Burra and reproduces 100 key paintings alongside drawings and a range of fascinating contextual material. It positions Burra as a major figure in the history of 20th-century art, placing his work alongside that of the German Expressionists and other important contemporaries and influences, such as Surrealism and the macabre. Long awaited, this book will be widely welcomed by all those with an interest in the art of this fascinating maverick and documenter of modern life.

(b London, 29 March 1905; d Hastings, 22 Oct 1976). English painter, illustrator and stage designer. As a student at the Chelsea Polytechnic (1921–3) and the Royal College of Art (1923–5) he became a talented figure draughtsman. In the second half of the decade he spent much time in France painting intricately detailed urban scenes, which depicted the low life of Toulon and Marseille. Works such as the watercolour Toulon (1927; priv. col., see Causey, cat. no. 33) were executed in a meticulously finished and vividly coloured decorative style. Burra usually used watercolour and tempera and occasionally collage oil paints.
