Anna Fox: Photographs 1983-2007 SIGNED

This is the first comprehensive survey of the work to date of this important British photographer. Specially commissioned by Pallant House Gallery to mark the 75th anniversary of Butlins the exhibition Anna Fox: RESORT will be on show until 2nd October 2011 in rooms 15 and 16.

Fox began practicing in the early 1980s, emerging as one of the most exciting colour documentarists at a time when photographic and cultural territories were being radically redrawn. Like many of the new colourists – such as Paul Reas, Paul Graham, Martin Parr and Paul Seawright – Fox was enchanted by the ‘ordinary’, and helped, as part of this group, to redefine documentary photography in Britain and Europe. Beginning with Basingstoke, Work Stations and Friendly Fire – each a critical exploration of Thatcher’s Britain in the 1980s – the book charts Fox’s progress through more personal, diaristic bodies of work such as Cockroach Diary; chronicles her relationship with the musicians Alison Goldfrapp and Linda Lunus; ending with Back to the Village, a series that reveals the social fabric and uniquely English customs witnessed by Fox around her home village in Hampshire.

Edited by renowned curator and editor Val Williams and featuring essays by David Chandler, Val Williams, Jason Evans and Mieke Bal.

Published to accompany a major retrospective initiated by Impressions Gallery, Bradford. Anna Fox was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2010.
